When I was stationed in Germany, I spent a lot of time talking to the old men, the old soldiers. My wife’s grandfathers both fought in WWII and were both wounded. One on the Eastern Front, one on the Western Front. I used to joke with the one shot by the Americans that it was my Grandpa who probably shot him. He’d joke back that they shot him in his leg and then patched him back up – he’d been shot with a .50 cal machine gun. He lost about an inch of leg bone and had to wear a custom made shoe with a 1″ thick sole to walk evenly.
Every single old man I talked to told me the only choice they had back then was Stalin’s communism or Hitler’s National Socialism. They saw what the commies were doing to Russia, so Hitler was the natural choice. Every one of them had a story about their family getting cheated by a jew during the Depression, too. Even if it was getting sold a dry milk cow, when they were trying to provide for 5 kids, that was a major thing when every penny you made was going to pay for food and shelter.
My friend who was in the Russian revolution never spoke of this. He was not Jewish. Guess it would have been alright if they were muslim communists or christian communists. My friend had a great fear of the KGB into his old age.
