If you think meat and poultry prices are expensive here in the USA–go to Japan where there are layers and layers upon layers of middle-men who take their grift as the product makes its way to the market shelves. I wanted to purchase some butter to make my relatives garlic mashed potatoes last November–and they looked at me wide-eyed like I wanted to purchase gold bars. Same with the puny potatoes they call potatoes, about the size of ping-pong balls. I can empathize with these ranchers in the USA who are victimized by the huge corporate distribution chains, who in fact have their finger into every aspect of the product (especially meats) from beginning to end. Look at these massive feed-lots where cattle are raised now and from there these animals go into a corporate production line. Even on that show Yellow Stone–the Dutton character was complaining on how ‘no one has figured out the packing’ yet… except for his savvy business daughter who saw how the 6666 Ranch was selling several million pounds of beef per year direct on the internet. I purchase very little, if anything from the corporate food chains–except from Trader Joes and Aldi markets who have their own supply chains. I grow lots of my own produce as well in the spring, summer and fall months to stay self sufficient as possible. One construction years ago commented on my mini-farm that I have–and I live in an urban area on a small lot, yet I can grow several hundred pounds of produce per year. Now if these ranchers can pack and ship direct to say markets like Aldi–then the revenue streams to them will be tremendous.
Just what we need…the buying and selling of all beef controlled by a single global system.
