I laugh at VPN for exactly the same reason.

Anyone who has any expectation of “Privacy” while using someone else’s Computer, Communications Network, or Software is an Idiot. And PAYING FOR AND USING THE ENEMY’S BEST SPY DEVICES, is just Retarded.
I figured that out when my kid was stationed in Bahrain, and Signal was the Navy approved messaging app. I told them it’s probably because the NSA or Naval Intelligence has a backdoor into it.
You have to figure anything you send out over the airwaves is getting picked up by someone – probably 5-Eyes, at the very least.
