Vietnam Repeat?

Size comparison: Vietnam overlaying Iran

Love them or hate them, the Russian position on the Iranian conflict seems accurate.

On Friday Dmitry Medvedev weighed in, and as expected the former Russian president and current Deputy Chairman of the Security Council was much less guarded in his assessment. He warned at a moment thousands of US Marines and Airborne troop are en route to the Middle East that if the US enters a ground war in Iran it will be another “Vietnam”.

American boots on the ground so far from US shores “threatens roughly the same consequences as what happened in Vietnam,” Medvedev said as quotes in NBC and others.

“When Washington intervened in a foreign country, located a thousand miles away, and for ten years was unable to find a dignified way out of this conflict,” he told the state-run RIA news agency.

He added that a potential ground operation in Iran would have “fatal consequences” for the broader region and for all involved in the war.

One response to “Vietnam Repeat?”

  1. There are plenty of Vietnam parallels here. I think Iran more closely resembles North Korea as a geographic problem for invaders though. SLA Marshall in his book on Pork Chop Hill and the end of the Korean War said that US Intelligence estimated that The Chinese and Norks were dug in in depth to an estimated distance of 10 miles from the frontline trenches. They were completely underground and our troops could observe no movement or indications of life in the enemy line during daylight though there were half a million men at least deployed there. Our airpower was negated by this, and Matthew Ridgeway shared that view in his book critical of that war’s over reliance on air power.
The Norks were dug in so deeply in that rugged terrain, they even built several infiltration tunnels under the DMZ wide enough for tanks to drive through in the 1970’s. They have been digging ever since and are known to be advisors to the Iranians for deep underground military facilities. You could probably fit 10 or 15 North Koreas inside of Iran. I’m sure our top military minds have thought about all of that though, and the air campaign is really paying off, (for Lockheed Martin).
