Old school farmers used to(and some still do) both grow livestock and crops. Livestock manure was used as fertilizer; grass and crops fed the livestock. This cycle is hard to beat; many in my area do this, but they are close to dirt poor financially. If you can, find an old school farmer, like Amish or just someone who does this kind of farming, and set up a deal with them. Agree to buy a certain amount of produce or meat in exchange for money or goods. You can’t go wrong.
Yep. I have crops and fruit trees but no livestock. I keep my acreage mowed with a tractor. As it is now it may be cost ineffective to keep the fields mowed this summer even if the fuel is still available. The learning curve on growing food was steeper than most people assume, and I wanted to avoid the time commitment of keeping livestock. There are lots of people keeping chickens and selling surplus eggs, that should be no problem, but beef and dairy are less common. Lots of decision to make in the near future.
Does nothing to help this year’s growing season, we will have famines around the world thanks to Israel’s war.
I farm about 20 acres organically, so I have massive compost piles. I have horse and cattle farms for 100 miles in every direction that can’t wait to bring me their manure. Sometimes I get 20 dump trucks a day. I also get wood chips and leaves delivered. The thing is, it usually isn’t enough. And there is MASSIVE inputs in the fuel to move all the material. If suddenly everyone went organic for lack of synthetic fertilizer, I would be screwed due to the competition for the now limited resources. And I only farm 20 acres. It will be physically impossible to get manure and compost to all the acreage that needs it in the US.

Old time farming practices have been lost due to this and the old way of farming must be brought back to the country for small farms to get grants and return to family farming.
