When I was in engineering school in the late 70’s, you had to drop a class before the mid terms, if you didn’t and got really bad grades or did not take the final, you received and I (Incomplete) which would turn in to a F before the next quarter start.
I should know, I struggled and failed a couple classes had to retake them. For the record all we had was hand held calculators.

I used to urge my students to learn a trade. America still needs electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, etc. Being a Boomer, I was urged to go to college by my Greatest Generation parents. And while my degree helped by subsequent career as a Peace Officer, I still was forced by my dad to learn basic skills such as vehicle maintenance, basic plumbing, house painting, truck driving, and electrical. He used to tell me and my brother there is nothing worse than a helpless man.
