Whether or not Iran needs nukes would depend on what Iran is trying accomplish. They don’t need them to create havoc in the sand box or hold the world’s economy hostage. But without them they can’t accomplish their number one main objective…the physical destruction of the west and the death of MILLIONS of us infidels. And THAT is the ultimate goal of islam. Which is why they have worked ceaselessly to acquire nuclear weapons and why they will NEVER cease trying. As long as Islam exists civilization is at risk.
Further, nukes still have one unique deterrent feature that puts them in a different class of weapon: the horrors of radiation on both lives and long term implications for large swathes of existing large population centers becoming uninhabitable for generations. This, in turn, is (or at least has been, historically) sufficient to maintain tenuous peace amongst adversaries, because no one wants to risk taking that hit.
Yes, hypersonics are hugely destructive, but the areas hit by them can be cleaned up and rebuilt, unlike those that have been subject to long term radiological contamination.
