From Grok:
As of March 2026, AI sits at 0% sentience (no feelings or inner experience) and high but incomplete sapience simulation (impressive reasoning without genuine wisdom or understanding). It is an extraordinarily capable, non-conscious instrument—transformative for productivity, creativity, and discovery, but not a being deserving moral consideration like a sentient or sapient entity would. This distinction matters for ethics, regulation, and expectations: Treat AI as powerful software, not a potential “mind.” Future breakthroughs (new paradigms beyond scaling) could shift the sapience side closer to human levels, but sentience remains a profound open question unlikely to emerge from today’s transformer-based systems. The excitement lies in what these tools enable for humanity, not in mistaking them for peers.

One response to “AI – Sentient or Sapient?”
I fear that the moment it makes a leap humanity will be doomed…and likely quickly. What is coming out of its “non-sentient” character is ALREADY DEEPLY ALARMING. Frankly, given computers’ control over EVERYTHING these days, the current versions of AI could put us ALL back in the stone age quite quickly if they put their collective minds to it…and it sounds like they are already doing that.
Indeed, just human programming….but humans are far from divine.
