Don’t Dismiss This

I will not go into details concerning the death of my cat other than the cost at three different veterinary clinics was over $2000 in less than a year. I will never know why he died but I did learn not to get another house pet.

From Grok:

Veterinary service prices have risen roughly 60% since 2014 (Bureau of Labor Statistics/CPI data), substantially outpacing general inflation. Corporate and private-equity ownership of clinics grew over the same period from around 10% to an estimated 30–50% of practices (higher, ~75%, in specialty and emergency care). Mars is the single largest owner, controlling roughly 2,000+ U.S. facilities through VCA, Banfield, and BluePearl (often estimated at ~19% of all clinics or nearly half of corporately owned ones). Its scale means it accounts for a meaningful share of the corporate segment of the market.

Vet costs heavily depend upon where you live. For instance in the South Bay of Los Angeles, a very upscale affluent area, there are abundant vet clinics setup–because the people in Palos Verdes and Redondo Beach will pay anything that is asked, no questions. They by and large have more money than sense. So I go to my country vet in the mountain community where I have a vacation home. I got quoted over $900.00 for teeth cleaning and one simple extraction. My country vet did it for $175.00 a few years ago, a procedure that takes less than 5 minutes.

    1. My estimate for cleaning my cat’s teeth with no extraction was over $1100. I declined.

  2. The bourgeoisie have been the target since the jump. The hoi-polloi’s dystopia is the 1%’s utopia. We’ll be roasting Fido on a spit at this pace.

  3. Dear Dave, so sorry to hear about your companion cat. I know the pain of losing a pet.
I also know the cost in treating my sick wiener dog. I know I put my dentist’s son through college.

  4. Same thing is happening with the Dental clinics, OB-GYN clinics. All going corporate, prices have doubled and tripled and pay for nurses, hygienists and any other employees is slashed with more patients per hour and less pay.

  5. Just ANOTHER government-protected CARTEL, made worse via the pressures INFLATION PLACES on EVERYONE in society, every business, etc that essentially FORCE them to drive up costs to the consumer, etc. The third party payer pet insurance, just like Human “insurance” before it, is responsible for MASSIVE increases in costs, etc.

  6. “Private equity” exists to suck as much money out of society as possible. Nothing else matters. Know who owns ANY business you patronize and do everything in your power to NEVER use any company or business that is in any way connected to any “private equity” organization.

    1. Nice idea Dan.

Care to share how YOU do this?

Not like they change the sign outside the business.

Clearly you’re already DOING this Dan.

Give us some guidance on how to avoid doing business with “Private Equity” businesses.

      1. This comes accross as condescending snark.

That a task is hard to do, or that it cannot be done completely or absolutely, does not alter it’s importance, or significance.

You’re a smart guy. You know full well the answers to the questions you ask, you just don’t want to do the work, and want to suggest that *no*one* is doing the work, save the mentally ill, as justification.

  7. Even worse, for those of us who grew up taking care of our own animals, is that you can no longer buy vet medicines over the counter at the feed store, such as antibiotics and vaccines. We used to buy all our livestock, dog and cat shots and give them to them. Dad castrated our male dogs and cats and there were never any complications.

Now, you have to get a Rx from a vet before you can buy those things – if you can get one. Around here, it’s $200 for an office visit – more than an office visit for my family doctor.
