You remember the nation your grandfather knew, a republic of limited government and sovereigns, but the screen tells you it never existed, that it was always thus, that the surveillance and the inflation and the endless war are normal, even necessary. You remember when boys were boys and girls were girls, but the curriculum tells you these categories were always fluid, that your memory of sanity is actually bigotry. You see with your own eyes that Iran is hospitable, that the people welcome strangers, that their only crime is independence, but the screen shows you terrorists, shows you danger, shows you an enemy that must be destroyed, until you doubt your own perception and cheer for the bombs. The gaslighting is total. It operates through every channel, every school, every pulpit that repeats the narrative. The goal is not merely to deceive but to destroy the capacity for independent thought, to make the victim dependent on the abuser for their very definition of reality. When the gaslighting succeeds, the victim will defend their abuser, attack those who try to wake them, and march willingly to their own destruction, convinced they are free.”
