Trump’s recent comments easing federal rules on beef processing

From Grok:

Trump’s recent comments (Aug. 26, 2026) were about easing federal rules on beef processing — so more small plants and ranchers could slaughter and cut cattle themselves rather than selling almost everything through the four large packers. That is a different lever from the 90-day lean-trimming import quota he also just signed.

It will not quickly raise total U.S. beef supply or drop grocery prices.

Why the lag is long:

The binding constraint right now is cattle, not slaughter slots. The herd is at a 75-year low. Packers are already running below normal utilization and have been closing or idling plants because they cannot fill the shackle space they already have. Adding more small-plant capacity does not create extra animals.

Biology sets the clock on extra supply:

What could move sooner:

Those steps can improve local access and rancher bargaining power. They do not add a large new volume of boxed beef to the national market in 2026–27.

Price effect:

Retail prices are high mainly because there are too few cattle relative to demand. More small-plant competition might shave packer margins a bit and give ranchers a better live-cattle price. That can help the incentive to rebuild the herd, but it does not immediately increase the number of steaks and pounds of ground beef on supermarket shelves.

The administration’s own short-term price tool is the temporary import quota, not processing deregulation.

Bottom line:

Regulatory easing on domestic slaughter is a multi-year structural change. Expect little extra supply or retail-price relief in the next 6–12 months, modest local effects in 1–2 years if existing plants expand, and any material national supply increase only after the herd itself grows—several years out.

  1. Look into American Prairie they have been buying up productive ranches and getting rid of all the cattle and putting bison on them they had also been snatching up BLM leases to run bison on as well til that got curtailed by Doug but they are still fighting it…They are part of the Agenda 30 plan to force everyone into 15 min cities where you own nothing and the only food you can have is bugs with parasites in them…

    1. Just remember Brother, bacterial, viral, and systemic diseases, many of which overlap with cattle are into the modern bison herds, since forever.
Raise your own if possible, including self butcherings and all that.

      1. Amen on that Brother…

Every one is forgetting cost of production
Retail prices just reflect the cost of getting goods from the farm gate through the checkout- complain all you want but beef on the farm is maybe maybe 2% above production cost and that’s beef all other products ( milk & cheese & corn & soybeans etc) are below cost …why?
Because people forget to factor the fuel & other energy costs & associated regulations & land costs and fertilizer
Just buy another $80000 p/u & 150000$ camper to go have fun, food should be free- it’s a right, right?( talking with your mouth full)

  4. I disagree w. Grok – it’s 4-5 years to new beef on the shelf. The female already on the lot has been committed. The NEXT female cow born, takes 2-years to be old enough to breed, then 10 months to gestate the next, which will take 18-24 months to be butcher-weight. THEN you have more beef in the supply. The alternative is to cull the dairy herds and have new-supply females online in 3-years from today… but that’s a pipeline already well established.
Everyone here would be wise, if they have the cash/credit, to find a local farmer, and buy at least a half-steer ($1800-2400). NO, do not go to Costco and load up, that’s not the same product. When I contacted my beef-farmer, he was 4-months out with a deposit, and that was for a returning customer (new customer’s have a 6-month wait).
Given the timing (5-years), and confluence with other food-based incidences, I believe this to be another sign they are ‘going for all the marbles here’.

      Or become the local farmer…

  5. Funny how Argentina suddenly wants to ship us beef with a 25% discount for their buddy Emperor Trump.
Also funny since the Chinese recently STOPPED buying Argentina’s beef due to high levels of banned antibiotic and other things.
Well, don’t worry I’m sure whatever diseases and parasites we get from the foreign beef can magically be cured with Trumps other good buddies at Big Pharma with a brand new MRNA shot and at least yearly boosters.
Man, we sure are getting that “Golden Age” good and hard ain’t we.
