M.A.D. only works if the threat of reciprocal destruction is believable.
MAD Is challenged today due to the proliferation of “non-State actors” who could put together a launch. Or “Rocket Man,” whose missiles, when launched, would be nearly indiscernible from a CCP launch.
To add to the amusement, the flight path of a Montana-based U.S.-launched ICBM response against NORKO aggression would, of necessity, (in the early stages) appear to the Russians to be on trajectories that could impact Russia.
Messy, to say the least.
“Peace Through Superior Firepower”?
Well…we had a good run…
Does anyone know what “testing” means when used in the same sentence as nuclear weapons? How many times do nations have to explode dangerous bombs to know the results destroy the environment and cause the death of people and animal life? Can’t nations just test the delivery methods without releasing deadly radiation, etc., in the process? Like shooting a firearm with blanks, you’ll know the firearm works without damaging anything. I’m ignorant, which can be cured with the facts and truth.
You don’t have to detonate a warhead to perform necessary functional testing of nuclear weapons. But you can not just build a warhead, put it in a bomb and expect it to sit for 20 years and then work when you need it too. They aren’t like conventional munitions. They require constant maintenance and testing to insure they can be relied upon. If an opponent doesn’t believe your deterrent is viable they will be more willing to engage in confrontational behavior. Testing lends credibility to our deterrent.
I see your point and thank you. It’s like flexing your muscles in the front yard to remind your pushy neighbors that you are in good shape. I just take exception to two of the side effects of each test. The first being that for every test conducted, there is an expense in replacing the used “ammo” in the inventory, and the second being the deadly contamination of the environment where the explosion is conducted.
